1. Current conditions, hourly & 16-day forecast
Sourced live from Open-Meteo, an open-data weather API that blends numerical weather prediction models (including ICON, GFS and ECMWF-derived data depending on region) into a single forecast. We fetch fresh data on every page load. Nothing is cached and served stale. Forecasts further into the future are inherently less certain than near-term ones; see our Disclaimer.
2. Historical & "check any date" data
Past dates use Open-Meteo's historical reanalysis archive. Dates beyond the live forecast window that haven't happened yet are clearly labeled as historical averages, never presented as a live forecast.
3. Air quality index (AQI)
Air quality. The US AQI score plus PM2.5, PM10, ozone, NO₂, SO₂ and CO breakdowns. Is sourced live from Open-Meteo's air-quality API, which aggregates ground-station and atmospheric-model data. Where a location has no nearby monitoring coverage, we show "not available" rather than guessing a number.
4. Precipitation radar
Live radar imagery is powered by RainViewer, which composites public weather-radar network data with playback frames covering the recent past. Radar coverage and resolution depend on ground-radar density in each country/region. Coverage is naturally sparser in areas with fewer public radar stations.
5. Map tiles
Base map layers are provided by OpenStreetMap contributors and CARTO's free tile service.
6. Satellite & wildfire data
Our Wildfire Map uses active-fire hotspot data from NASA's FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System), derived from MODIS and VIIRS satellite instruments. Hotspots reflect thermal anomalies detected by satellite passes, not a real-time video feed. There can be a delay between an actual fire and its detection, and small or well-obscured fires may not register.
7. Severe weather alerts
Where shown, severe weather alerts are sourced from official public feeds. Currently the US National Weather Service (NWS) for US locations. Coverage is limited to regions with a public alert feed we integrate; absence of an alert on this site is never a guarantee that no severe weather is occurring. Always check your local official authority (see our Disclaimer).
8. Timezone & local time
Every location's local time, sunrise/sunset, and "today" boundary is calculated using the IANA timezone Open-Meteo returns for that location's exact coordinates (requested with timezone=auto). Never your device's browser timezone. This keeps a city's "today" accurate even if you're checking its weather from the other side of the world.
9. Location search & postal codes
City, region and country search resolves to live coordinates via our location database and geocoding. Indian postal/PIN code lookups use India Post's public PIN code data.
10. Outdoor suitability & life-index scores
Scores like "Outdoor suitability," running/driving/umbrella/sun-protection guidance are calculated by TodayWeather from the live temperature, feels-like temperature, rain probability, wind speed, UV index and AQI values above, using fixed threshold rules (for example, higher rain probability or AQI lowers the suitability score). 11. What we don't do
We don't run our own weather satellites, radar stations, or forecasting models, and we never fabricate a number when a data source has no coverage for a location. We show "not available" instead.
